CUC Maranoa Newsletter
Winter 2024
Centre Manager's Message
By Jess Wild, Centre Manager
Welcome to the Winter Newsletter!
The cold weather has arrived and with it, we welcome all the rugged up students in their slippers, ugg boots, occasional late night jarmies and fluffy robes. There’s no judgement here, just a lovely warm study space, open to all.
The last quarter at CUC Maranoa has been busy – as always – for our small team. We’ve been working on big projects within the wider community and we’re thrilled to be able to share these with you. So, make sure to check out all the details below.
This time of the year is peak netball season in the Maranoa, and just like any good netballer we want to make sure you don’t forget – we’re here if your need!
For some students it’s final assessments and exams, whilst others are mid-trimester and some are just about to kick off their next block. Wherever you are in your 2024 year of study, don’t forget the CUC Team is here to support you in any way you need. Our LSAs are here in person Monday-Thursday, with bookings available. Headspace Roma is onsite the first Tuesday of the month, feel free to grab a cuppa with them.
And if you just need a moment away from the books, let us take you out for a coffee down the street!

Careers Expo
Uni information night
We had an incredible time at the recent Careers Expo at Roma TAFE for local high school students. Our interactive activities allowed students to explore a wide range of exciting career options and the pathways to achieve them. We encouraged students to think outside the box and consider careers they may not have thought about before. We also asked them what they would like to do if there were no obstacles to prevent them from doing any job they wanted.
CUC Maranoa, together with, SQRH, UQ, UniSQ and CQU held a study advice night at our centre.
Local students and those looking to further their education had the opportunity to speak with uni and SQRH representives to have their questions about university study answered.
Paint & Sip Workshop
We recently held a Paint & Sip workshop that gave our students a chance to showcase their artistic side.
It was a fun afternoon where students got to relax and create in a casual setting.
Big thanks to Christina for running the workshop.
Level Up Your Future!
High School Career Discovery
We are delighted to share the success of our first ever Level Up Expo. Students from year 8 St John's School Roma and Year 9 Roma State College had the unique opportunity to get hands-on experience with a range of different careers that might otherwise be inaccessible to them.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our stall holders from University of Southern Queensland - Australia, The University of Queensland, CQUniversity Australia, TAFE Queensland, Maranoa Regional Council, South West Hospital and Health Service, MPC Kinetic, Santos Ltd, Origin Energy, Switch FM / Switch Webcast, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), and Tivoli Rose Skin + Beauty.
Additionally, we sincerely thank our dedicated volunteers from headspace Roma, South West Indigenous Network, Desq, WestWind Energy - Australia, CC Donut Productions, and CUC Balonne for their invaluable assistance throughout the day.
Special appreciation goes to the staff and students from St John's School Roma and Roma State College, whose participation and enthusiasm were instrumental in making the event a resounding success.
Describe your image
From interactive exhibits and hands-on workshops to engaging talks and demonstrations, the Expo offered students a firsthand look at various professions. Each booth was designed to ignite curiosity and provide practical insights into what it takes to succeed in different industries.
Students were particularly enthusiastic about the interactive elements of the Expo. The chance to speak directly with professionals allowed them to ask questions and gain valuable advice on educational pathways and skills needed for their desired careers.
The Level Up Expo not only broadened students' horizons but also reinforced the message that there are many exciting and rewarding careers to pursue. By connecting students with real-world professionals and experiences, the event aimed to inspire and motivate them to think about their future with confidence and ambition.
I Dream of Being...
Children's Book Illustration Competition
The Roma Library's Walk of Art is filled with color and creativity as it proudly displays the imaginative drawings of our local children. This amazing exhibition, featuring the theme 'I Dream of Being...', showcases the dreams and aspirations of students from across the Maranoa Region.
Each piece of artwork reflects the unique vision and hopes of our young artists, from future astronauts and veterinarians to artists and athletes. The drawings are not just pictures but a glimpse into the bright futures envisioned by our community's youth.
This initiative, part of CUC Maranoa and Maranoa Regional Council's children's book project, aims to encourage children to dream big and pursue their passions. By highlighting these drawings, we hope to inspire other young minds and remind everyone of the boundless possibilities that lie ahead, even in regional areas.
We invite everyone to visit the Walk of Art at Roma Library and experience the dreams of our youngest community members. Celebrate their creativity, support their aspirations, and perhaps rediscover your own dreams along the way.
Join us in fostering a future where every child feels empowered to pursue their dreams, no matter where they are from.
Take a tour!
The drawings have been judged and the ones which will appear in the book have been selected. Winners will be announced at the beginning of Term 3.
